Speakers and topics:
Berend van der Kolk on 'the Quantified Society'
Berend van der Kolk is an associate professor at VU Amsterdam, and is interested in performance measurement systems and their impact on employees. By carrying out field studies, he seeks to understand why we measure performance and how quantifying aspects of (organizational) life shapes our view of the world. His work appeared in various academic journals, but also in outlets such as the Financial Times, Follow The Money and The Guardian. He's a fellow of Amsterdam Young Academy, and in 2024, he published the book The Quantified Society at Atlas Contact Amsterdam, addressing the implications of quantifying performance.
Berends' presentation will be about the Quantified Society. KPIs, dashboards, scorecards, review scores: every day we attempt to make sense of the world we live in by quantifying it. Students are concerned with their grades, while employees have to achieve SMART targets. We compare our scores with those of others and create rankings of the most productive colleagues and the most profitable firms. In this talk, Berend discusses what quantification does to us and our society. We raise the bar, the pressure to perform increases, and we lose sight of what really matters. When do the costs of metrics outweigh the benefits? And is there a way out?
Hessel Brouwer, CMA, CSCA on 'Performance Management Best Practices'
Hessel Brouwer, CMA, CSCA, leads the newly formed Performance Management Shared Interest Group at IMA. He is also a director of the Global Board of IMA and chairs the Regional Advisory Committee for Europe.
Hessel serves as the head of controlling and finance at Migros, where he is responsible for performance management and strategic business partnering for a portfolio of Swiss retail companies. Prior to that, he held finance leadership positions at Dätwyler and Johnson & Johnson.
Hessel will discuss performance management best practices. What makes good Performance Management? Why do many organizations struggle with Performance Management? What best practices can you implement today? In a highly engaging session, we’ll draw on insights from the audience and the PM SIG to answer these questions.
